Hi, my name is Benjamin Kay! I live in Reading (pronounced "redding") Ohio, a suburb of Cincinnati. I go to school at the University of Cincinnati (affectionately known as UC) and work in a lab shared between UC and Cincinnati Children's Hospital, located on East (Medical) Campus. I am enrolled in UC's Medical Scientist Training Program, a dual-degree program where I am working toward both MD and PhD degrees. I plan to graduate in 2016.
I am currently working toward a PhD in Neuroscience at the University of Cincinnati (UC). I am interested in cognitive neuroscience, especially resting-state functional connectivity. Right now I am studying drug-resistant epilepsy as a model of aberrant brain connectivity using EEG and functional MRI. Specifically, I am working with primary, or idiopathic generalized epilepsy resistant to the common drug valproate (Depakote, valproc acid). Hopefully my research will lead to better epilepsy therapy!
I earned my bachelor of science degree in biomedical engineering at Washington University in St. Louis. My background is in electrical engineering, digital signal processing, and computer science. I have completed years one and two of medical school at the University of Cincinnati and passed Step 1 of "The Boards" (USMLE). I am currently learning independent component analysis, graph theory, and statistics alongside basic neuroscience as part of my graduate training.
I live in an old, stone cottage in Reading, Ohio. It's small, but it has a big kitchen, which is great because I love to bake! There is a washer and dryer in the basement. The neighborhood is nice and also safe to walk around in, even at night. It is located within walking distance of a grocery store and a CVS Pharmacy, and it's just a 15 minute drive to the Tri-County Mall (and lots of other cool stuff). It takes me about 30 minutes to ride the bus into campus every day (20 minutes by car). If you would like to live in Reading and eat freshly baked food every day, then you should consider renting my second bedroom! Call me or send me an e-mail if you are interested. Pets are welcome.
The best way to contact me is to send me an e-mail or call my cell phone, or both if the matter is urgent. My cell phone gets free SMS, so don't be shy about texting.
